Rediscovering LEGO®

A Childhood Hobby

As a child, I played with LEGO® all the time, and it was so cool among my peers. My friends would come to my house, and we played together with my LEGO collection for hours. My collection was by far the biggest among my friends. But as I grew up, the perception slowly changed from cool to childish, and my friends started making fun of me for still playing with LEGO bricks while they were chasing girls and playing computer games. At about the age of 11 or 12, I stopped playing with LEGO because I wanted to fit in with my friends and classmates.

Time went on, and my LEGO collection just gathered dust. After 17 years, I decided to try building a new LEGO model, so I ordered Medieval Blacksmith (21325). Building the model was so much fun! It reminded me of my childhood and all the hours spent with LEGO. It sparked a small flame that led me to rediscover my childhood passion.

But I still felt that it was childish and didn’t talk about it much with my friends because I felt embarrassed. Later, while visiting my friends Naty and Dany for a few days, they had a surprise for me. They took me to a small LEGO exhibition. To be honest, the exhibition wasn’t great—it was mainly targeted at small children, not adults—but the gesture showed me that it’s totally okay to have this hobby.

This experience changed how I viewed playing with LEGO as an adult. After that, I realized that true friends will support me, and I started to talk more openly about playing with LEGO. It’s so important to have a hobby that makes you forget about time and your worries, and LEGO does this for me. I rediscovered my childhood passion, and it has turned into my adult passion.

Owning My Passion as an Adult

I’m proud to be an AFOL (Adult Fan Of LEGO), and I own it now. If someone makes fun of me for it being childish, it just shows me who is and who isn’t a true friend. I want to surround myself with true friends, and I believe sharing my hobby helps me find those people.

Thank you, Naty and Dany, for helping me on my journey back to LEGO. By the way, Daniel composes awesome music that’s perfect as a soundtrack for building LEGO models! You can listen to his music on Spotify. I also thank my wife who supports me in everything I do. ❤️
